RESOURCES: Baptism

NEW TESTAMENT ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS

Why be baptized?

  • To follow the example of Jesus Christ, who Himself was baptized (Matthew 3:13-17)
  • To obey Christ's command (Matthew 28:16-20)
  • To let others know you are a believer (Acts 2:37-41)

What does baptism mean?

  • Baptism is an outward sign of an inward change
  • Baptism is a reminder of our new life in Christ and that we are a part of the family of God
  • Baptism is an act of obedience
  • Baptism is a demonstration of our commitment and submission to Christ

Who should be baptized?

Every person who has personally made the decision to believe and accept Christ into their life (Acts 2:41)

When should we be baptized?

  • As soon as you have believed (Acts 2:41, 8:36-39)
  • When you sense the Holy Spirit leading you
  • When you understand the meaning of baptism

What if I was baptized as an infant?

Pathway recommends that you prayerfully consider what God's Word teaches and be baptized again if you have not been baptized since you became a believer. It doesn't devalue your prior experience but simply reflects your desire to be baptized in the same way Jesus was baptized.

Every member of Pathway Community Church has been baptized as a believer. We dedicate infants to God. We baptize believers.

How are we baptized?

Baptism is a Greek word that mean to dip or immerse. At Pathway we baptize by immersion (Matthew 3:16)
  • We kneel in submission to God
  • We are baptized three times forward to honor God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit

If you have additional questions or are interested in being baptized, please contact the church office.

RELATED SCRIPTURE

"When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, 'Brothers, what shall we do?'

Peter replied, 'Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.'

With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, 'Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.' Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day." - Acts 2:37-41 (NIV)
